Replenishing Seagrass from Seedlings
For decades, FWRI scientists have carefully monitored seagrass health throughout Florida, witnessing both alarming die-offs and encouraging signs of recovery. From 2018 to 2020, Tampa Bay saw a concerning reduction of its seagrass meadows, with a loss of over 16 percent, or more than 6,350 acres. These losses not only affect the biodiversity of Florida’s waters, but also our coastal water quality and the survival of vulnerable species. FWRI aims to use research findings to help resource managers make informed, effective science-based decisions for Florida’s seagrass conservation and restoration.

Assessing Black Bear Cubs - Southwest Florida Bear Project
Переглядів 38128 днів тому
FWRI bear biologists study demographic variables of black bear adults and cubs in Florida, including adult female survival, cub survival, and fecundity (reproductive output) to estimate subpopulation growth or decline. Biologists collect detailed data by tracking female bears and their offspring for several years. The resulting estimate of subpopulation growth allows researchers to predict bear...

Storm surge pushed water onto the golf course allowing the manatees to access the pond. When the water receded, the manatees were trapped in the pond.

You would think they’d come up with a less dangerous idea. I can see the carnage these would cause if someone jumped in for a swim and landed on one.

These fish attractors are typically for your entry level fishermen who will come and suspend a bobber over them, not cast sinking lures at them. Their locations are also shared so that you can avoid them if you'd like. Structures such as these aid in the recruitment of young sportfish to the lake's population, giving them valuable escape cover and feeding areas where the rest of the lake bed may be essentially a "desert". Anyone complaining about these should reassess their knowledge of how fisheries are made sustainable for public use.

We have been seeing these in NW Ohio for the last 4 or 5 years. The local Wildlife State Park might have seen them longer(Not sure) Im just near lots of Farm fields and they seem to circle the area. One day they are in the North field. The next morning or day they will be in SW field near the woods. Just a group of 3 of them.

Thank you for your comment. The Florida sandhill crane (G. c. pratensis), is a non-migratory year-round breeding resident. They are joined every winter by ~25,000 migratory greater sandhill cranes (G. c. tabida), the larger of the two subspecies, and likely the birds you are seeing. The greater sandhill crane winters in Florida but nests in the Great Lakes region. You can read more about sandhill cranes here: myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/birds/cranes/sandhill-crane/
